such ``a phenomenal and improbable recovery in time to look good in practice and convince everyone that he can be effective Monday night."

Fiedler wasn''t that convincing Thursday when he took 50 percent of the snaps with the first-team offense while Griese got the other half.

"I noticed he was in a little bit of pain," running back Ricky Williams said of Fiedler''s handoffs during that practice.

And Fiedler did not recover well from the practice, either. Part of the reason he missed Friday''s practice is he was, "just sore from what he did [Thursday]," Wannstedt said.

"Doctors thought it would be best to give him a day and rest him," Wannstedt said. He added that if Fiedler does not practice Saturday, his decision on picking his starter would be easy.

Of course, the irony of this situation lies in the fact coaches are handing the reins of the offense to a player who also might not be 100 percent healthy. Although he was cleared to take part in every aspect of practice last week, according to Wannstedt, Griese has admitted a preseason ligament injury to his left great toe still is not 100 percent.

Griese has toyed with the idea of using a protective-lined shoe that would guard him from suffering further damage.

With the mobility of both players in question, the Dolphins have pared the use of quarterback bootlegs and waggles in their offensive game plan.

The Dolphins have talked among themselves about Griese being signed this offseason for an occasion such as this. They believe Griese, who started 51 games in five seasons for the Denver Broncos, is accomplished enough to help Miami beat the 1-5 Chargers.

Resting Fiedler against the AFC West cellar-dwelling Chargers would allow him to be ready to play against the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans the following two weeks.

Both Fiedler and Griese have declined to speak to the media since Wednesday, but Fiedler is scheduled to address the issue today. I''ll continue to monitor this situation closely and keep you on top of any development that may arise through tomorrow morning.
