fronts and blitz packages.

"Theyve got some different schemes and some different looks," Couch said. "You never know what to expect. You just have to adjust to it on the sidelines and try to get it figured out."

Said Holcomb: "[New England] is going to give you a lot of different looks. Theyre going to give you something new you havent seen just for your game, so you have to be honed up for what youre doing."

Couch knows from experience that the earlier he forgets about the last weeks two interceptions, the better he gives himself a chance to be this week.

"You just have to think about whats out in front of you," Couch said. "When Wednesday rolls around its a new week. Its a new team. You have to block that stuff out and forget about the mistakes. Youve got to play with confidence."

As Canton Repository sports writer Steve Doerschuk noted Friday, through seven games, there is plenty to chew on in the quarterback controversy that began in earnest with Holcombs 429-yard playoff game last season at Pittsburgh.

Their 2003 playing time has been almost equal. Both quarterbacks have played in four games for the 3-4 team.

Couch is 72-of-111. Holcomb is 73-of-123.

Couch has passed for 717 yards, Holcomb for 641.

Couch has thrown four touchdowns and five interceptions. Holcombs numbers are five and five.

Couch has been sacked eight times, twice more than Holcomb.

Couchs rating is 80.1. Holcombs is 69.9.

Holcomb, though, was clearly better than Couch last Sunday. There is little doubt he would be the man if health was not an issue.

But it is. Holcomb seems uncertain how his sprained left ankle and broken right leg would hold up through four quarters. Thus, Davis can keep the Patriots guessing who his quarterback will be.

What about protecting Holcomb to an extent by playing both quarterbacks Sunday?

"I dont think you can play that way," Couch said. "Im sure Kelly feels the same. You dont want to be coming in and out. You cant get in the rhythm of the game. You worry about little stuff you shouldnt be worried about."
