Head coach Butch Davis remained mum on the Browns quarterback situation Friday and said hell announce a starter for Sundays game in New England 90 minutes before kickoff.

The team is hopeful but unsure Kelly Holcomb will be 100 percent healthy and doesnt want to take any chances.

"We got put in the situation last week where Kelly wasnt 100 percent," Davis said. "But we felt like he was healthy enough a week ago to put him in the game. He went in and played very well, and I dont think he took any steps backwards. Were just taking it day by day and week by week."

Tim Couch and Holcomb have split reps in practice this week, something both are becoming accustomed to.

"You just prepare like youre going to be (the starter)," Couch said. "And if youre not, youre still ready to play. If your number is called you have to go out and play well."

New England head coach Bill Belichick said preparing his team for two quarterbacks is standard procedure.

"You always have to be ready for the backup quarterback because hes always one play from being in there," Belichick said. "Thats part of your weekly preparation. In this case, we dont know who its going to be, but weve seen a lot of both guys on film and have a lot of respect for both players. Well just have to have an awareness of whichever guy it is and the things that are specific to that player and try to defend accordingly."
