as many passes as he used to, but his blocking on opposing safeties, linebackers and occasionally even offensive linemen, has been extremely effective, according to Fox and general manager Marty Hurney.

"We stress being a physical football team, and Moose is a very physical player. He really fits in with what we are trying to do here," Hurney said.

Muhammad is a wide receiver, whose main job is to catch passes for a living. This season, in large part because the Panthers'' offense emphasizes the run but also because Muhammad has dropped several passes, he hasn''t caught many. With 16 receptions through the Panthers'' first six games, Muhammad is on pace to register just 42 catches for the 16-game regular season.

That total might be all right for some wide receivers, but it''s not what the Panthers are used to getting out of Muhammad. He has averaged nearly 76 catches per season since 1998, although the average is a bit deceptive because of the extreme highs and lows across those five seasons. His highs came in 1999 and 2000 when he registered 96 and 102 catches, respectively; his lows came when injuries cost him five games in 2001 and he caught only 50 passes, and last season when the offense changed and he caught 63 in 14 games.

But Muhammad said that he thinks he''s having a fine season. And both Fox and Hurney concurred.

Blocking isn''t something the average fan notices all that often, and it''s no different, said Muhammad, when wide receivers perform the chore.

"Sometimes I think it''s hard for people to see what kind of job blockers are really doing down the field. Obviously, offensive linemen don''t get the credit they deserve, either. Neither do tight ends, and they''re involved in the blocking schemes a bunch. So I don''t expect people to notice me," Muhammad said.

Hurney and Fox notice all the time.

Also of interest. ...

According to Panthers.com staff writer Brett Borden, not too many players in the NFL are fond of artificial turf. Because the surface doesn''t give, or at least give
