that late stretch. He threw seven in Mark Campbell''s direction. Can you imagine Bledsoe ignoring Price in a similar situation? Price would be whining for days. All of which prompted Sullivan to wonder if Reed was secretly relieved they weren''t throwing his way. You can''t drop the ball when it''s not thrown to you.
Reed has to produce at some point. The running game is a shambles. But the Bills ran best last year when opposing defenses, fearful of Bledsoe, sat back in a two-deep zone and took their chances with the run. This year, teams are blitzing more because they''re not as worried about getting burned by the pass. It won''t change if Reed doesn''t come around.
"He has to do it," said Moulds, who had eight catches for 114 yards. "He knows that. We talk about it every day. I just told him that he needs to go out and relax. But at the same time, he has to make plays. He has to step up."
The Eagles double-teamed Moulds all day, taking their chances with the other wideouts. They rushed an extra man for much of the the first half, leaving their defensive backs to play man-to-man against the Bills'' other wideouts. They were missing three-fourths of their starting defensive backfield, and for the most part they got away with it.
Reed was matched up man-to-man all afternoon against backup cornerbacks and still couldn''t get open. One catch for nine yards -- when his team throws 43 passes -- is unacceptable from a No. 2 receiver. If Bledsoe no longer bothers to look his way, they ought to sit Reed down and give Clarence Coleman a chance.
How much worse could he be? Asked about his team''s poor execution, Gregg Williams mentioned the "need to separate in man coverage." It sounded like a direct challenge to Reed, his struggling second-year wideout.
Maybe it''s unfair to single out one guy, when there are so many worthy targets. Are you starting to wonder if this defense is a tad overrated against the run? The Eagles'' offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage in the early going and rushed for 177 yards.
