Veteran Ed McCaffrey was downgraded to doubtful Thursday and likely will miss his second consecutive game Sunday at Baltimore because of what head coach Mike Shanahan referred to as a "chronic" condition in his right knee.
"We''ve just got to get him healthy," offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak said.
McCaffrey, who according to DeBruin, still has some of the best hands on the team and is perhaps the Broncos'' best downfield blocker, has been virtually a non-factor in Denver''s passing game this season.
He has made eight catches for 73 yards, with no touchdowns. He went without a catch in the opener and in Week 5 against Kansas City, then received limited playing time against Pittsburgh because of knee and thigh problems. He was inactive Sunday at Minnesota.
Shanahan wasn''t specific about the injury but said the problem might be "tendinitis."
McCaffrey, in his 13th NFL season, did not practice Thursday after going less than full speed Wednesday.
"Eddie''s a guy who will push through anything, but right now he can''t go," Shanahan said. "Miracles do happen, and he could be fine (today), but it doesn''t look good (for the game)."
No. 4 wide receiver Chris Cole also is far from healthy. He has a high ankle sprain and jogged Thursday but did not practice.
That leaves Rod Smith and Ashley Lelie as the starters and rookie Adrian Madise as the backup.
