5812,4,5,'Second-Rate Performance From No. 2 Man...','In an article published Monday, Buffalo News columnist Jerry Sullivan advised readers there was only one man who couldn''t defend Josh Reed last Sunday. Himself.

However, he didn''t have time to talk after the Bills'' loss to the Eagles.

Soon after the locker room opened, the trainers gathered up Reed''s clothes and escorted him to the training area to be examined by the doctors. The official diagnosis was a bruised back.

And according to Sullivan, "while they were at it, the doctors should have checked Reed out for a bruised ego."

There are a lot of things wrong with the Bills'' offense. The running game is an embarrassment. The offensive linemen are getting dominated. Travis Henry is hurt. Players are committing stupid penalties. Drew Bledsoe forgot it was fourth down. It''s a full-blown offensive crisis.

But make no mistake about it: Eric Moulds'' fellow wideouts are a big part of the problem.

Everyone wanted to believe this team wouldn''t miss Peerless Price. They''d be more balanced, right? They''d win with defense and a strong running game. Reed didn''t have Price''s speed, but he was a gifted receiver, a tough runner, and he''d be more than adequate.

But as Sullivan points out, he''s been a bust as the No. 2 receiver.

Bobby Shaw has been far more productive as the third guy -- although Shaw had some forgettable moments against the Eagles, with a fumble, a false start penalty and two drops. But it was Reed who was supposed to ease the sting of Price''s departure. Instead, Price seems more valuable by the week.

Reed has 10 catches for 112 yards and no touchdowns. That''s a day''s work for some NFL receivers. His tendency to drop balls is hard to miss. Bledsoe seems to have lost all confidence in him. Bledsoe threw 25 passes in the final, frantic 13 minutes against Philadelphia. Not one was intended for Reed.
