of not knowing," Harrington said. "It was just nice to have some resolve to it, some closure to it."

McMahon indicated he was not entirely surprised by Mariucci''s decision.

"That''s the situation," he said. "Ever since I''ve been in Detroit, it hasn''t been the greatest ride but you just keep on fighting, you keep on plugging away and hopefully things will work out in the end."

The fact that the quarterback issue lingered until Wednesday afternoon created some doubts as to whether Mariucci was really undecided, whether he was trying to justify a change at quarterback or whether he was threshing it out with owner William Clay Ford. The latter apparently was not a factor.

"We discuss a lot of things," he said. "We discuss the entire team each week with Mr. Ford and Bill Ford Jr. and the scouts and the front office. He leaves those things up to me as to who we''re going to play and how we''re going to play them."

Mariucci''s decision might have been complicated by neither quarterback receiving much help from his teammates. The Lions average only 85 rushing yards per game (No. 26 in the NFL) and the receivers are struggling to get open and hang on to passes.

Quarterback "wasn''t the only area of concern we had," Mariucci said. "There are other areas, too. We''re trying to decide where we go, who''s best for now and who''s best in the future."

Harrington was asked if the wait for Mariucci''s decision had humbled him.

"I think losing 16 games in the last two years is going to humble anybody," Harrington said. "But it doesn''t take away from my confidence. I''m just as confident now as I was coming into last season, coming into my senior season (at Oregon).

"This is the game of football. I play the game of football and I know I can play it well. As much as it does humble you in this kind of situation, it doesn''t take away from my confidence at all."

Also of interest....

According to Pro Football Weekly, teammates and coaches alike spent last week praising rookie receiver Charles Rogers.
