we''re into the season, we''re reluctant to go beating on Fred. He gets enough wear and tear on Sundays. He''s encouraging that (the defensive players trying to strip the ball), so we''ll stay aggressive with him. Usually, when your No. 1 running back is running through the drills, you don''t go after him and attack the football as hard as you would the other guys. Fred''s encouraging that, and he wants to work on it. He needs to be better protecting the ball," Del Rio said.
The coach added that Taylor''s emphasis on holding onto the ball in practice has had a positive effect.
"I think anytime you put emphasis on something and work on it, I think you''re going to see results. There''s concentration and there''s focus on that. I think those things are important and will help," Del Rio said.
Del Rio also thinks Taylor can''t always go for the home run.
"That would be a thing I''d point to. When you look at it, he''s trying to make the home run happen rather than just play and run hard and use his ability and get what he can and secure the ball," he said.
Del Rio admits there''s a fine line for Taylor because it''s a plus when he does break one.
"You do it fundamentally sound and the right way and if you happen to pop and hit the home run, it''s not because you took a liberty with the ball. You can hit home runs and still protect the football. He doesn''t have to necessarily go in and put two hands over and cover up like a fullback and a tight end will in a lot of traffic. He has to be smart in those situations," Del Rio said.
His teammates are supportive, and wide receiver Jimmy Smith can understand Taylor''s frustration with the fumbles.
"Fred''s like me," Smith said. "He thinks he has to carry the whole team. It''s all right to feel that way. He''s got to realize fumbles are a part of the game. Everybody fumbles. Everybody drops passes. Everyone throws interceptions. Yeah, it''ll hurt. It should hurt. He''s going to come back, and he''s not going to fumble. It''s just going to motivate him that much more to go out and not fumble. It''s
