before the injury, Gannon was playing nowhere near the level of previous seasons, including when he was the NFL''s MVP in 2002.

With Gannon held out of practice Wednesday, Tuiasosopo took the first-team snaps. He would be the first Raiders quarterback other than Gannon to start a game since Wade Wilson finished the 1998 season. But Tuiasosopo said nothing has changed except that he''s on the field instead of taking "mental reps" on the sideline.

"He could be back next week, but I''m not going to assume anything," Tuiasosopo said. "I''m going to do what I''ve been doing each day, each week so far this year. I''m going to prepare like I''m going to play. For Rich, I hope he gets better, but I''m going to make sure I''m ready to go."

The Raiders will practice today before being excused until Monday. Callahan wants to see Gannon practice before allowing him to start his 79th consecutive game.

"I''m hopeful he can get on the practice field in the next week or so," Callahan said. "If he can prepare himself and get back from the injury, he would be the starter."

If not, Rick Mirer would back up Tuiasosopo.

"We don''t know if Rich is going to be ready or how long he may be out, and it''s just something we can''t worry about right now," receiver Jerry Rice said. "Bill Callahan is going to make that call. But Marques got an opportunity to show that he could take on that responsibility. We know if Rich can''t go, we''ve got a guy that''s capable of doing it. That feels pretty good."

Mirer said players can''t get caught up in a controversy.

"Rich is the guy that has all the experience and all the knowledge, and this is his offense," Mirer said. "If he''s healthy, he''s our guy. Tui understands that as well as anybody."

"With fans, it''s hard to keep up with what they''re thinking. We''re not trying to satisfy everybody. We''ve got to take care of our business. We''ve got to stick together, and having that kind of division in here isn''t healthy. So no one is going to question what Bill is doing."
