As reported by Chicago Sun-Times beat man Brad Biggs, "in an admission of failure with yet another quarterback plan, the Bears effectively gave up on Kordell Stewart on Wednesday, scrapping what was a bad fit from the start."

Jauron ended rumors of whether Stewart''s deep left thigh bruise led to Chandler''s promotion, or if the decision was performance-based.

"Did we make the change because of injury?" Jauron said. "No. The change was made because Chris should have the chance to play. Injury is not a question. We''ll see where it goes."

All the team''s work since Stewart signed a two-year contract in March is trashed -- the time spent in spring drills and the plans implemented since training camp opened July 25. The Bears have wasted the first part of the season and are in last place at 1-5, with Stewart''s record including all but a 24-17 loss last week at Seattle.

Although Stewart had a 90-minute meeting with Jauron on Tuesday, long enough for them to presumably reach the same page, he preceded the coach to the podium with a spin on the situation that Biggs described as a "football version of ''Who''s on First?"''

"The only reason I''m not in there, for the most part, in my opinion, is because of my injury," Stewart said. "That''s the way we have to approach this.

"It''s not a situation where I''ve just been yanked and I''m sitting on the bench and watching Chris, and now all of a sudden it''s like, did he get a fair shake? I have to go off of what''s going on right now. Last week, [with the leg injury] it just couldn''t happen with how we do things when I''m in there. Right now, it''s a situation that''s pretty
