throwing the ball, he has been far less of a threat to run. Through the first six games a year ago, McNabb ran 39 times for 245 yards and four touchdowns. Through six games this year, he has run 34 times for 173 yards without scoring a touchdown.

That, presumably, has nothing to do with his sore thumb.

On a more positive note. ... Brookover suggested if nothing else, McNabb''s sense of humor remains intact.

When asked about throwing without the tape during a morning test of his injured thumb, McNabb started talking about throwing with a glove. He laughed when reporters started scribbling down the bogus information. He later said the last time he had so many problems completing passes was when he was playing backyard games as a kid in Chicago, and he wasn''t even playing quarterback.

"Statistically, it''s not where I want to be. I don''t try to correlate it with anything. I don''t try to compare my stats now versus my stats last year. What has happened in the past is over. This is a new year."

The fact that the Eagles are last in the NFL in total yards and passing yards does not escape McNabb. The fact that the team is 30th among 32 teams in scoring also bothers him.

"Probably the number-one positive is that we''re 3-3," he said. "But there''s really nothing positive as far as what we''ve been doing on the offensive side. We know what we''re capable of and we know what we''ve been through in the past couple of years. We know what we did in training camp and in the preseason, but where we''re at right now, there''s nothing positive."

McNabb, however, remains convinced that a happy ending will be written by the end of this year.

"I feel great," he said. "Despite what everyone has been saying and despite the questions I get, I feel great because I know everything is going to turn out positive. And, once it does, I''ll be the same guy I am now -- laughing and joking and feeling the same way. ..."

For what it''s worth, McNabb threw his sixth interception of the season last Sunday. It came on his 181st attempt of the season. Last year, his sixth
