Following up on an item included in a previous Update. ... According to Washington Post staff writer Nunyo Demasio, Spurrier spent most of his post-practice media session Friday denying a television rumor that he almost resigned before the regular season.

But Spurrier reiterated his intention to step down after the 2004 season if the Redskins aren''t successful. Spurrier''s five-year, $25 million deal expires in 2006.

"I mentioned last year that I certainly plan to give this job three good years," Spurrier said yesterday. "We''ve got a young quarterback, Patrick Ramsey, who''s coming around. We''ve got receivers, an offensive line. Our defense is in good shape. I think we''ve got a good team here. I''d like to see what happens."

According to Comcast SportsNet, Spurrier had to be talked out of quitting two days before the season opener on Sept. 4 against the New York Jets because of unhappiness, partly with the management structure under owner Dan Snyder.

"Of course I''m happy," Spurrier replied Friday. "We''ve got a good team, we haven''t played extremely well the last couple of games. But I think we''re ready to play in Buffalo."

Two Redskins officials also denied the report yesterday, although they added the coach has been frustrated by the team''s 10-12 record during his tenure.

One source close to Spurrier told Demasio on Friday that the coach has had occasional differences with Snyder but nothing out of the ordinary. The official, however, said that their relationship was tested when Snyder cut quarterback Danny Wuerffel and tailback Kenny Watson on Aug. 30 over Spurrier''s strenuous objections.
