free safety who uses his body like a battering ram. Hilliard''s right shoulder was dislocated, the pain was excruciating and his season was finished after only seven games.
There will be no retribution against Dawkins, who was fined $50,000 for the illegal hit, as Dawkins will not play because of a foot injury. Hilliard wasn''t reveling in any sort of revenge anyway, as he''s not that way and never has been during a stay with the Giants marked by one serious, debilitating injury after another.
It started when his rookie year in 1997 ended after only two games when a frightening neck injury led to spine stabilization surgery and threatened to end his career nearly before it started.
Hilliard has had multiple toe surgeries, a bruised lung and sternum, a torn-up thumb and at present is playing despite a dislocated right pointer finger and a torn tendon in his left middle finger. He leads the Giants with 30 receptions and three touchdowns.
"If I was going to be tentative, I wouldn''t have signed another contract," said Hilliard. "I''d be at home with the kids and wife, going back to school. I still enjoy competing and playing the game. I''m not going to change what I do.
"I was a running back growing up, then I was converted into a quarterback, went back to running back, didn''t play receiver until I got to college. Taking a hit or two never really mattered to me."
Just seeing the Eagles is likely to bring back bad memories for Hilliard. Despite all he''s been through, he considers last year''s injury the most painful he''s ever experienced.
"After I got the hit and they took me to the locker room and I popped my shoulder back in the second time, I knew it was going to be tough," Hilliard said. "I laid down on the operating table and they took a needle and they tried to find a nerve to deaden my right arm. That was the worst pain I''ve ever had in my life, I am so serious.
"He missed twice, he sticks it in, I''m dying. [He says], ''Do you feel it numbing?'' ''No.'' He pulls it out and puts it in again. He finally got it. I hate needles anyway."
