Sunday, the Texans posted a franchise-record 458 yards against Tennessee despite the fact starting receivers Johnson (two catches for 49 yards) and Gaffney (no catches) were held in check. Bradford led the way with five catches for 127 yards, while Davis and Miller combined for 117 yards on 13 receptions. Davis also ran for 59 yards on seven carries.

The Titans were successful in denying Johnson and Gaffney the ball, but defending the Texans'' Kings formation is a pick-your-poison proposition at best.

"We have three good receivers on the field and a good tight end," Johnson said. "You can''t cover everybody, and you can''t double everybody. The Texans have made progress in protecting the quarterback, but six of their eight sacks have come when they used three receivers.

In a league in which defenses strive to make the offense one-dimensional, the Texans are far more predictable when they use three receivers, passing at a rate slightly more than 2-to-1. The pass-run ratio is almost dead even from other formations.

"Ideally, you want to be able to do a lot of things well from a lot of different formations, and that''s what we''re working toward," Palmer said. "I''ve been pleased with the progress we''ve made on offense.

"Have we been pleased with our production in the Kings formation? Yes. But you can''t just
