It''s difficult to be a well-balanced, diverse offense working from a single formation, but it''s becoming increasingly clear which personnel group best utilizes the Texans'' strengths.
"Any time you''ve got Andre, Corey and Jabar on the field at the same time, that''s most likely going to be one of your best formations," Miller said. "Any decent tight end, like myself, can go in there and get a couple of balls, too. You''ve got to cover the whole field when you''ve got guys out there like that.
"I don''t want to speak for anyone else, but I think our offense is more productive out of that formation. It spreads the defense out and gives the quarterback more options, especially when you can put Domanick Davis back there. He has proven that he can not only run the ball but catch the ball and make plays out of that formation. I like it."
What''s not to like?
The Texans have averaged 6.7 yards per play from three-receiver formations, compared to 4.5 in other sets. Better talent has made the formation more productive and helped the Texans become the AFC''s top offensive team through the first six weeks of the NFL season.
Offensive coordinator Chris Palmer said the Texans'' increased usage of three-receiver formations mostly has been the result of how they match up with particular opponents.
"You''re always looking for individual matchups and (opportunities) where you can get one of their good players off the field," Palmer said. "If that''s the case, you use it. We''re going to try to mix plays and formations and personnel groups as we face different opponents. It''s going to vary from week to week. You look back to Miami, we didn''t use Kings as much as we did the last couple of games. It depends on who we''re playing."
