Head coach Mike Tice made that prediction Wednesday night during his radio show on KFAN and was not backing down Thursday. Tice, in fact, let Smith know about it.
"He told me today in practice," Smith said. "He told me I was going to have to back him up."
Smith has made significant progress since Tice held him out of the season-opening game at Green Bay, rushing for 93 yards on 21 carries over the next three. He got a career-high 10 carries and his first NFL touchdown during last week''s victory over San Francisco, and the Vikings hope to elevate his playing time steadily.
"I think it just came from my preparation this week," Smith said, "the way that I''m picking up on things, the way that I''m going out there and working my butt off every day. It''s good that they see that I''m going out there to work every day."
Also working in Smith''s favor -- and for Tice''s prognosticating ability -- is the Falcons'' poor run defense. Atlanta has given up nearly 150 yards rushing per game this season, ranking the Falcons 28th in the NFL.
