of Grossman being called upon are seemingly greater given Chandler''s history. The 38-year-old has suffered five concussions in six seasons and failed to finish four of seven starts in 2002.

The Bears selected Grossman with the 22nd pick in the first round intending to develop him for the future. As a junior last season at Florida, he passed for 3,402 yards and 22 TDs.

Grossman has reportedly benefited greatly from working with quarterbacks coach Greg Olson, who was hired to fill a new position on Jauron''s staff that was created in part to help aid the rookie the Bears had planned to draft.

"He coaches you, quizzes you on the plays and at the same time makes sure your mechanics are where they should be," Grossman said.

In practice, all Bears quarterbacks not taking the actual rep confer with Olson.

"Every play that is called, they are right next to Greg," Jauron said. "They have the script, they know the defense, they go through the progression, they go through the read.

"With Rex out on the field, that''s what is happening every play he is not in there, and then obviously he gets his reps. After practice they work some more on his timing and throwing the ball to the young receivers and young backs. He will get most of his throwing done then.

"But there is no time on the field when the offense is running a play that he''s left to his own devices. He''s right there being coached by Greg."

Mayer went on to remind us that even though Grossman hasn''t enjoyed the kind of on-the-job experience fellow rookies Kyle Boller in Baltimore and Byron Leftwich in Jacksonville have, all that could change in an instant on Sunday.

"I''ve spent these five weeks preparing like I was going to play and this week there''s an even more possibility if something bad were to happen," Grossman said. "Last week if something bad happened Chandler would have come in. This week I know that I''m the next in line, so I have to know my stuff down pat.

"As far as being thrown in the mix right away, it''s still early in the season
