clearly has sparked the morale of a dispirited offense.

Players echoed genuine excitement about the chance to move the football behind Chandler, and their rhetoric never addressed the need for Stewart to get to know his receivers and the offense better -- the theme after every loss this season.

"We''ll certainly try to play to his strengths," offensive coordinator John Shoop said of Chandler.

No matter how unhealthy Stewart''s left leg really is or how unfair it seemed to open competition for a quarterback job Stewart felt was his, one fact justifies Jauron''s tinkering: It can''t get much worse for the offense, which is ranked 31st in the league and has been outscored 43-3 in the first quarter.

The Bears believe Chandler will open up a passing game that has been limited by either Stewart''s lack of execution or Shoop''s lack of imagination, depending on the source.

"With Chris, you always have to be on your guard," said Dez White, the Bears'' leading receiver this year. "If you run the route, be ready for the ball, because he''ll find you quick. It''s not predictable, where you know the ball''s coming to you. You know Kordell, you know when the ball''s coming to you because the quarterback''s looking at you. As opposed to Chris, who''s looking at everybody."

With that in mind, White mentioned ways Bears receivers can make themselves easier for Chandler to find by adjusting their patterns quicker when they sense he''s in trouble. Stewart also has suggested similar "sight adjustments" for receivers, but the confines of the West Coast offense don''t always allow for such improvisation. Not that improvising hasn''t been necessary.

"That has been an issue because usually we don''t do a lot of that," White said. "The way our offense is designed, if they blitz, we already have a blitz [plan] with a back in the flat or somebody running a shorter route on every play. In pressure situations, though, we''re going to have to start breaking off some routes, I think."

Rest assured the Bears'' offense will encounter pressure situations
