Last week''s touchdown illustrated how comfortable Green has become with Morton. Facing third and 8 from the Green Bay 10, Green and Morton correctly read blitz at the snap. Morton converted his route to a hitch, caught Green''s pass and wheeled to the outside, where he beat cornerback Al Harris to the corner for the touchdown.
"If teams are going to risk blitzing us, we need to make them pay," Green said. "Those are the kinds of plays we need to make."
And they''re the kind of plays Morton was rarely in on last year, when he registered career lows as a starter in receptions (29), yards (397) and touchdowns (one) and was inactive for the final two games because of a back injury.
Morton, who had gone over 1,000 yards receiving four times with the Lions, was also bothered by bad Achilles'' tendon and an unfamiliar offense.
"I think he''s more confident in that he knows more of what he''s doing," Green said. "I think he understands the timing of the offense, where he needs to be at certain times with routes. We do so much shifting and moving, I think last year he was thinking: Am I at the right depth? Am I breaking at the right angle?''
"I think maybe there was some indecision. This year, not only is he more healthy -- last year he battled the injury bug a little bit -- but just the confidence level is skyrocketing."
As Carter noted, that much was apparent Sunday, when Morton showed speed, body control and poise in the clutch.
And head coach Dick Vermeil hopes to see similar clutch playmaking all season.
"Last year was the first year in our program and he had never worked in practices as long and as fast as we work," Vermeil said. "He wore down and wore out, almost. He came much better prepared this year knowing what to expect. I think that''s the number-one thing. He''s more prepared for how we do things."
