me and said, ''Dub, now I got one more than you.''"

One of the reasons for the big numbers so far is that the Bengals are not going with a receiver-by-committee approach this year. Third receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, the only other veteran in the group, has missed the first four games with a hamstring injury. He had 41 receptions in 2002. Also missing is Ron Dugans, who was released at the end of training camp after catching 47 passes in 2002.

This year, the third and fourth receivers are rookies Kelley Washington and Lawrence Hamilton.

"They''re really the only two veterans we have right now," offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski said of Johnson and Warrick. "We''ve probably made more of a conscious effort for them to be our playmakers. The last two years, the ball would get spread around more, but now the focus is on them, and rightly so."

Johnson is a big-play deep threat. Warrick is a slot receiver. Their talents complement each other.

"They understand, Peter is going to be open more underneath because Chad is on the outside," Jon Kitna said. "Chad is going to have more space on the outside because Peter''s doing his thing underneath."

The good news for Bengals fans is both remain under contract after this season. Warrick is in the fourth season of a seven-year contract. Johnson is in the third of a four-year contract.

"What you''re seeing is what happens when you give something a chance to grow," Kitna said of his two prime receivers. "Good things happen. We''re not even where we''re going to be."

Johnson said he needs Warrick.

"Having Pete opposite me, it helps big time," Johnson said. "It''s a lot of pressure off me. It puts the defense in a bind, especially now getting the tight end involved. We''ve got backs catching balls out of the backfield. What do you cover? There''s nothing you can focus on."

I''ll also remind you that Warrick seems to be putting the inconsistency that has marked his pro career to date in the rear-view mirror.
