can''t stuff it to guys if it doesn''t belong there."

That would seem to indicate that the wideouts aren''t getting open all that much.

Pinkston, who led the Eagles with 60 catches last season but has just 13 this season, including none Sunday, said: "I really don''t have an answer right now. ... You see teams trying to take our outside guys out of the game, [make our] tight ends and running backs beat them. We''re just being patient right now. It''s frustrating, but we know in due time it''s going to happen."

Pinkston, asked about the effect of McNabb''s bone-bruised thumb, said: "Being a receiver, knowing that my starting quarterback is a warrior, I''m going to stick with him."

McNabb''s accuracy obviously has been a huge problem. but for what it''s worth, Bowens noted that he seemed to be throwing the ball well in practice Thursday.

Against the Cowboys, Pinkston failed to catch McNabb''s best deep throw of the season, a 34-yard fourth-quarter strike to the end zone on which Pinkston suffered his knee injury. "They made a great play; I had the cornerback beat and the safety came over," Pinkston said. "I should have come down with the catch. It happened, and I just [put it behind me]."

Rookie Billy McMullen replaced Pinkston for the Eagles'' last drive. McNabb threw a pass to him down the left sideline that could have put the Birds in range for a potential game-winning field goal, but the throw appeared to surprise McMullen and bounced off his back shoulder.

"I just looked late," McMullen said. "He put it in a position for me to make a play. It wasn''t his fault."

The Eagles'' wideouts had eight touchdowns through five games a year ago. Their offense set a franchise points record. Nobody expected this kind of struggle, with 10 of the 11 offensive starters
