ran off left tackle and hit the second level quickly. Safety Greg Wesley came up to put a pop on him at about the 10, but Davenport showed some rare elusiveness, juking out Wesley and finishing an 18-yard TD run.

Sunday''s showing was one of the most impressive of Davenport''s career. In two games against Detroit last year, Davenport ran for 157 yards, which was 85 percent of his rushing total for the season (184 yards).

But those two games convinced the Green Bay coaching staff that Davenport was better suited for running back, rather than the fullback position he was drafted to play.

The 6-foot-1, 245-pound battering ram was all the rage through mini-camps and throughout training camp, running over linebackers and safeties and often requiring multiple tacklers to bring him down. And heading into the season, Davenport was expected to be the perfect complement to Green.

But after Davenport''s struggles against Detroit, Fisher became the primary backup vs. Arizona as Davenport didn''t receive a single carry. A hamstring injury kept Davenport inactive against Chicago, then he carried just once against Seattle.

But the coaches insisted Davenport wasn''t out of the loop, and he might have earned his way back in Sherman''s good graces last Sunday.

"We''d like to get Najeh in there and pound him a little bit," Rossley said. "That can keep Ahman''s workload down and also help our running game. Believe me, we want to get him back in the rotation. But a lot of that''s up to him showing us he can change some things permanently."

Fisher doesn''t have the natural ability or sheer power Davenport does, but he''s as assignment-sure as anyone on the team. And that will make it hard for Davenport to unseat him as Green''s caddie.

But Davenport runs with as much power as anyone on the roster. And if he consistently proves he can hold onto the ball, he can still prove a reliable option, rather than the liability he''d been the first month of the year.
