The lengthy dreadlocks that used to adorn his head were gone. In their place was a completely bald scalp more suited for military duty.

For Davenport, changing his hair was easy. What he''s more interested in now is changing his current situation.

Davenport was banished to head coach Mike Sherman''s doghouse for early-season fumbling problems. But he took a step in the right direction in Sunday''s loss to Kansas City, carrying the ball six times for a season-high 43 yards and scoring his first touchdown of the year.

"What got him out of the rotation was the fumbling," running backs coach Sylvester Croom said. "We can''t have that. But we want him in the mix and to be someone we can count on because he has a lot of ability."

Davenport, who was drafted as a fullback in 2002, entered the season as the primary backup to Ahman Green. And in an effort to keep Green fresh and healthy, the Green Bay coaching staff aimed to give Davenport as many as one-third of the carries each week.

Instead, Davenport fumbled away his chance - literally and figuratively.

Against the Detroit Lions in Week 2, Davenport carried the ball eight times for 32 yards. But the Lions ripped the ball out of his hands three times.
