following question: "Is Tom Brady''s sore right arm preventing him from playing at the level he established through the first 33 starts of his career?"

He says no. His head coach says no. But the debate continues because the Patriots have sown seeds of distrust when it comes to injuries.

But as Curran notes, Brady''s abnormally inefficient (for him) start must be somehow tied to the damaged bursa sac in his elbow or the separated shoulder he suffered last season against Miami. How else to explain the fact that he''s thrown five touchdown passes and seven interceptions, when he entered 2003 with an almost 2-to-1 TD/INT ratio (46 to 27)?

Even Jeff Fisher, the head coach of Sunday''s opponent, the Tennessee Titans, says he can see Brady battling through pain.

He seems to be throwing like he has in the past, and his unqualified insistence that he isn''t affected is at least a little persuasive.

"I think I am throwing the ball fine," said Brady. The accuracy is there and the arm strength is there. I really don''t think it is a factor."

Asked again yesterday, he said: "I''m trying to tell people it''s not a problem. It really isn''t. I feel fine. It''s banged up, but so''s everybody else in this locker room."

So what is it that''s affecting him? It sounds like a matter of three things -- technique, decision-making and growing pains.

"What happens to quarterbacks, whose
