well. He came in this morning, felt a click and a pop," Antonopulos said. "He probably had some kind of stress reaction that was going on in the area it didn''t show up in the (initial) X-ray (after the Chiefs game) and the movement Monday -- getting up, watching TV -- fractured the bone."

Two days after getting the inkling that something serious was awry, Plummer remained stunned about the injury.

"I''m still shocked," he said. "It''s weird how your body works. I didn''t think there was anything wrong with my foot and obviously it was sore from the Kansas City game. I was worried after that game for it, but my mind was more on my shoulder, getting that ready. And I stood up and felt a little pop and it started getting worse as the evening went on."

Plummer moved around on Wednesday with a boot-style cast on his left foot, which will remain there through the rest of the week.

"Starting next week, we''ll start some exercise on him just to keep him conditioned," Antonopulos said. "We''ll do all the things we can to keep him strong until he''s able to do all the functional things he needs to do to get back."

Plummer has grappled with injuries since Week 2, when he fell on his right shoulder as he stretched for a first down on a scramble at San Diego. He managed to throw a touchdown pass just after injuring the shoulder, but subsequently left that 37-13 win, with Steve Beuerlein playing the rest of the second quarter and the remainder of that game.

He was on the injury report for the days following that game, but played against the Oakland Raiders eight days later and posted a perfect first quarter (rating 158.3), accounting for three touchdowns as the Broncos throttled Oakland. He played and finished the next two games, but re-aggravated the shoulder injury late in the Week 5 loss at Kansas City.

Plummer was listed as questionable throughout the days leading up to the win over the Pittsburgh Steelers with a sore shoulder. He took a painkilling shot prior to the game that would have allowed him to play in case of an injury to Beuerlein,
