this season, he completed an 8-yard pass to tight end Desmond Clark and then threw an interception late in the Bears'' 24-13 loss Sept. 14 at Minnesota. He entered after Stewart sustained a neck stinger.
Chandler, who turned 38 last Sunday, has started for an NFL-record seven different teams in 16 NFL seasons since entering the league as a third-round pick with the Indianapolis Colts in 1988.
In his second season with the Bears, Chandler feels that he''s better equipped to lead the offense than he was last year when he was still involved in the assimilation process.
"I''ve been getting quite a bit of work at least throwing against our defense and what not," he said. "I''ve been mentally trying to keep up with things and it''s not that hard once you''ve been around the league for a while.
"I know this offense a lot better. I feel a lot more comfortable with this offense than I did last year, so I just tried to get all my physical work in and just try to be ready for whenever an opportunity comes."
Chandler takes over an offense that ranks dead last in the league in sacks per pass attempt. Stewart was dropped 18 times in five games while completing 75-of-144 passes for 745 yards with 4 TDs and 7 interceptions.
With the mobile Stewart out of the lineup, the Bears obviously must make adjustments to accommodate a traditional pocket passer like Chandler.
"Chris has never been what you call really a running quarterback," Jauron said. "He has more mobility than people would think and is an outstanding athlete. But Kordell is a great athletic quarterback in terms of movement with the ball. In terms of throwing the ball, that''s where Chris has always made his living."
Thomas, meanwhile, is listed as doubtful for Sunday''s game with a sprained foot, meaning there''s only a 25 percent chance he''ll play.
"From what I''ve been told it would be a long shot," Jauron said. "People heal at different rates, so I suppose it is possible. But in my mind it would be a long shot."
