likely will replace the injured Anthony Thomas at running back as Chicago attempts to snap a 10-game road losing streak.

Stewart did not practice Wednesday due to a left leg injury he sustained two weeks ago against Oakland and aggravated in Sunday''s loss at New Orleans. The nine-year veteran is listed as questionable on the injury report.

But head coach Dick Jauron declined to indicate whether the switch to Chandler was due to Stewart''s injury or another disappointing performance against the Saints.

Stewart completed 10-of-21 passes for 152 yards and 1 TD and lost two critical fumbles on blindside sacks. He was just 5-of-12 for 79 yards midway through the fourth quarter.

"It''s a question that doesn''t need to be answered really," Jauron said. "The fact is that Kordell is hurt and Chris is playing this week."

Jauron was then asked if Chandler could retain the starting job with an impressive outing.

"We''re trying to win one game this week," said the coach. "We''ll address those issues if they come up in the future."

Stewart, who never missed a game due to injury in eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, did not view Wednesday''s move as a demotion. He said that he felt he would be starting Sunday in Seattle if it weren''t for his ailing leg.

Stewart revealed that the only other time he''s missed practice in his pro career came in September 2001 when he sprained both ankles in a season-opening loss to Jacksonville.

Chandler has not started a regular season game since starting the penultimate contest of last year. In a 24-14 loss at Carolina, he completed 7-of-8 passes for 113 yards and 1 TD before being knocked out with his fifth concussion in six years midway through the second quarter.

Remarkably, the Bears have not run an offensive play with the lead since Chandler left the field last Dec. 22 in Charlotte, a span of seven games. The only time they had a lead this season -- a 3:28 stretch against Oakland -- the Raiders possessed the ball en route to the tying field goal.
