In the second half, a screen to Williams on third-and-7 gained 11 yards to set up another field goal.

Finally, a handoff to Konrad -- his first carry after going 11 games without one -- went for 11 yards to set up a clinching touchdown.

Great adjustments? Partly. But Cole reminded readers this isn''t the work of a mad scientist who spends his hours figuring out 50 ways to re-invent the screen pass. Turner finds a new way to run old plays.

"You''re not going to run things you''re not good at," Turner said.

As a youth, Turner was fascinated by quarterbacks who called their own plays, including Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath, Kenny Stabler and Daryle Lamonica.

"The beauty they had is the spontaneity of wanting to mix it up and obviously the ability to call the plays," Turner said. "But they had a great advantage because they knew what they were good at; they knew what they were best at calling. I was always intrigued by that."

Of course, Turner''s philosophy belies the image. Good plays are building blocks for more plays. The plays are not independent inventions. Sometimes, they are not even what his own players believe.

"Everything he has is prepared for something down the road," McKnight said, furthering the idea that Turner simply plants some plays each week just to confuse future opponents. "He''s preparing for a storm down the road and we''re going to have the perfect storm."

Said Konrad: "I think he''s always thinking a game ahead."

It''s a nice idea, but it''s not exactly reality, Turner said.

"No, we''ve always worked the opposite way," he said. "We''ve tried to build things off what we do well. Realistically, every call that you make in an NFL game is about trying to win a game. There are some times where you get ahead some that you can worry about next week, but that''s not very often."
