Turner took advantage of the the Giants'' aggressive pursuit -- or over pursuit if you prefer -- of his star halfback by calling unusual plays that caught New York''s defense completely off guard.
Which prompted Miami Herald staff writer Jason Cole to advise readers it''s safe to assume we''ll see more of the same tomorrow in Jacksonville.
And as heavily as I rely on Williams as a Fantasy owner, I have to admit the strategy is sound from Miami''s perspective even if it doesn''t yield the kind of totals I''m looking for.
As Cole noted, wherever Williams last went last Sunday the Giants went, as many as six or seven defenders charging relentlessly towards him, seemingly oblivious to what was going on around them.
In the coaches'' booth, Turner played along for most of the first half, calling for handoff after handoff to Williams, hoping they would work but knowing they probably wouldn''t.
Turner also knew the more successful the Giants were in stopping Williams, the more likely Miami would have an opportunity to expose them. By the second quarter, the Giants had held Williams to no yards on five carries and had even come up with a fumble deep in Miami territory to set up a touchdown and a 7-3 lead.
The time had come. Turner called for a formation that the Dolphins had run out of numerous times in their previous game against Buffalo. In that game, Williams pounded away for 42 carries in a 17-7 victory.
So Williams took the handoff and went left as the offensive line crashed hard in that direction. And the Giants faithfully followed along. Seven defenders ran Williams'' way, leaving no one around the line to contain wide receiver James McKnight as he ran back to the right on a reverse.
The result was the kind of play occasionally seen at the high school level. McKnight ran 68 yards -- untouched -- for a go-ahead touchdown, weaving his way through the secondary with the help of blocks from Seth McKinney, Chris Chambers and Randy McMichael.
