Luchey will undergo a surgical procedure during the bye week Oct. 20-26 to remove three pins that were inserted surgically Oct. 1 to help heal his broken left thumb. The injury occurred Sept. 24 in practice when a swing pass from Craig Nall was tipped by a defender a split-second before hitting Luchey.

When the pins are removed, Luchey said he would play for two weeks with the thumb in a splint. After that, he won''t need a protective covering.

Luchey continues to practice but has been inactive since the injury. He dropped an easy pass Friday because of the cast on his thumb. ...

The team released receiver/return man Reggie Swinton on Thursday. According to the Sporting News, team officials wanted to keep Swinton, but they needed to add a defensive lineman this week and Swinton, acquired in a trade with Dallas last week, was determined to be the most expendable player on the roster.
