and didn''t have much experience at it prior to turning pro last season. He said he was a kickoff returner in high school in Sacramento, Calif., but only got to run back a couple because opponents always kicked away from him or squibbed the ball to an up-back.

He said he returned punts for the last four games of his career at the University of Tennessee in 2001.

Against the Panthers, Stallworth returned three punts for an average of 11.3 yards and five kickoffs for an average of 22 yards. He had 44-yard punt return called back due to a penalty.

"Our number one thing is ball security and he did a good job with that," special teams coach Al Everest said. "He handled the ball well and made some nice returns. We''d like to get Michael back but right now we''ve got to do what we''ve got to do and Donte is fine."

Stallworth appeared to get more comfortable and decisive as last week''s game wore on. On his first punt return, he started to the right, stopped when he saw a Carolina defender there and ran the other way, away from his wall of blockers, finishing with a 4-yard return.

"That first one, I don''t know what the hell I was thinking," Stallworth said with a self-deprecating smile. "I had a wall over there. All I would have had to do was make one guy miss and if I got past him it probably would have been a touchdown."

Lewis coached Stallworth throughout the game, getting pictures that were taken from overhead of each return and showing Stallworth where the holes were and how to set up his blockers.

"I was just trying to explain to him what to look for," Lewis said. "You could see him figuring it out as he went along."

Stallworth, who said viewing the entire field on kickoff returns helped his peripheral vision when he was playing wide receiver, also has been trying to figure out why he has struggled on offense.

Last season after being a No. 1 draft choice he caught 42 passes for 594 yards and a team-high eight touchdowns despite missing three games because of a hamstring injury.
