Mike McMahon -- not Harrington -- ran the two-minute drill at the end of practice.

All was back to normal a day later, however.

"He''s done everything he''s supposed to have done since the Minnesota game -- everything," Mariucci said. "I put Mike McMahon in there once in a while to get him a snap. He needs a snap now and then.

"We gave him the two-minute drill yesterday. Why? Because we do that. He got a few of them in training camp and then, every month or so, I''ll have the backup do that. It''s by design, by plan, according to schedule. Everything''s great."

The only Harrington injury that concerns Mariucci -- even in the slightest -- is the right forefinger dislocated against Minnesota.

"He missed a play, went back in," Mariucci said. "He wraps it in practice, it looks a little swollen to me. That''s my main concern -- a finger on the throwing hand of a quarterback."

Harrington played last week at Denver with the injured finger and completed just 15 of 33 pass attempts. He insists the finger had no effect on his accuracy.

The Lions did not include Harrington on this week''s injury report, and there seems to be no question that he will start Sunday at San Francisco.

In a related note. ...

In an article published Monday, Pro Football Weekly suggested that Harrington has been mistake-prone, but cited scouts as saying offensive deficiencies in Detroit are a lot for any player to overcome.

"His best receiver is a rookie," the NFC personnel director said. "The offensive line isnt physical enough to run the ball 30 times, and they dont have a back capable of running in such a way that you can play ball control."

Lions coaches believe Harrington is getting rid of the ball too quickly and could have more success if he allows plays to develop. Harrington has not been erratic with his control but has had passes deflected and made some mistakes trying to make something out of nothing.

The Lions say they are not concerned and that, without the threat of a running game, any quarterback will be tortured.','10/3/2003','8:30:00 AM','Friday',231
