England, the Titans went back to him moments later for a two-point conversion. Heimerdinger said Calico would''ve been on the field a lot against the Steelers two weeks ago, but the Titans didn''t get enough snaps.

"When you are a young guy you are going to make mistakes, you are going to drop passes," quarterback Steve McNair said. "The thing about him is he wants to catch every pass, and I just don''t want him to get down on himself. But he is a guy who is willing to go out and work hard after practice to correct any mistakes."

Mason said he''s also seen big improvement in the former Middle Tennessee State star.

"Ty is coming into his own," Mason said. "He still has a ways to go, and he''ll tell you that, but he is feeling more comfortable. He is growing each and every time he gets on the field."

But Calico, who began his collegiate career at linebacker, has much to learn. At this point in his development the youngster is only working at one receiving spot. When he learns the others, he''ll be able to line up just about anywhere in the formation.

And at 6-4 and 223 pounds, the ultra-athletic Calico -- and his 4.34 speed -- are going to give opposing defensive coordinators nightmares.

Until then, Calico will patiently wait his turn.

"This season I just want to help out as much as I can. I want to get some of the pressure off of [Mason, McCareins and Bennett]. I also want to learn and get better as a receiver," he said.

"I guess in my second or third year I want to be one of the go-to guys. But right now I''m just trying to stay patient and trying to get them to trust me. I think I am starting to show them something now."

If you ask me, Calico is almost a carbon copy of Oakland''s Jerry Porter -- a big, fast and unusually athletic former defensive back, who spent his first two seasons learning the offense, working on technique and honing his route-running before emerging as a legitimate threat capable of taking full advantage of those superior physical attributes.

One difference between the two might be coaching.
