extensive action of the season, Calico had three catches for 92 yards. In his first four games he made just two catches, though both were for touchdowns.

"I am glad they didn''t sort of just throw me in the fire and let me mess up. Right now they are easing me in, and that has helped me," Calico said. "I think I could have done it before, but it probably wouldn''t have always been pretty. But I think it''s working out."

Breaking in a rookie is rarely easy, especially at wide receiver. Since the 1996 draft only two receivers -- Randy Moss and Terry Glenn -- have had at least 1,000 yards their rookie seasons. Houston''s Andre Johnson, who will face the Titans on Sunday at the Coliseum, is on pace to join them.

Johnson, the No. 3 overall pick, has 26 receptions for 346 yards. He has better numbers after his first four NFL games than the top three all-time reception leaders (Jerry Rice, Cris Carter, Andre Reed) after their first four contests.

The Texans needed Johnson to make a big impact early and it didn''t take him long to become quarterback David Carr''s top target. The Titans have had the luxury of time with Calico, who remains behind Derrick Mason, Justin McCareins and Drew Bennett on the depth chart.

But that''s not the only reason Titans fans didn''t see more of Calico the first four games.

"We didn''t think he was ready," offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger said. "He never showed us anything in practice to show he was ready. ... He is still going to be here, but if I am waiting for him to develop and he''s dropping balls and not get off the bump-and-run, then my family is on the street."

Calico still has trouble getting off the line of scrimmage in bump-and-run coverage by defensive backs, and he''s still dropping some passes.
