"It''s going great," he said. "Personally, I think pads are overrated. If guys know how to practice in shells [smaller shoulder pads and helmets] -- and not everybody does -- then it''s just as advantageous as practicing with pads."

The key, said Fauria, is being able to go hard and fast but not breakneck. It is a balance players must strike because Sundays, most definitely are breakneck.

"Attitudes and philosophies and game plans can change every week. I''m sure Coach Belichick wasn''t sitting there before the season saying, ''I think we''ll go in shells for three weeks,''" Fauria said. "But when you have so many people down, you can''t risk the people who are practicing getting hurt. A lot of times that can happen in practice. But I think you can get just as much done without pads."

Belichick isn''t sure when he will revert to form and go back to full-scale practices.

"What I try to do is evaluate the team week to week and do what I think the team needs and what is best for the team for that particular week given whatever the challenges are that we are facing, the opponent, the whole situation, our state of the team, mental, physical and otherwise, and try to do what is best for it," he said. "I think it depends on what you feel like your team needs."
