Makes It Though A Full Practice Without Pain...','According to St. Paul Pioneer Press beat man Bill Williamson, Daunte Culpepper surprised his coaching staff Thursday by going through an entire practice without pain. It was his most extensive work since fracturing three bones in his lower back Sept. 21 at Detroit.

Culpepper hasn''t played since, giving way to Gus Frerotte the past two and a half. That will change.

"He was so good I''m already announcing that he''ll start against Denver," head coach Mike Tice said of Culpepper. "I was shocked. I thought the kid needed another day off, but he ran out to the field like Willis Reed and he was great. He''s back. I think he threw just one incompletion all practice."

"I was surprised how well I was running," Culpepper said. "It''s a blessing."

Culpepper wasn''t the only pleasant surprise. Halfback Michael Bennett took a step toward getting on the field by the team''s Nov. 2 goal by running on the grass for the first time since suffering a fractured left foot in April.

Trainer Chuck Barta said Bennett still has some hurdles but could start practicing in a couple of weeks. After a setback in July, the team thought Bennett would likely miss the season.

"I''m getting there," Bennett said. "I''m not at full speed, but it felt good. No pain. We''re getting there."

He''s earned it. The former Marshall star''s six touchdown receptions match his highest total through the first five games of a season. Moss had six in his first five games as a rookie in 1998. Then he went four games without a TD reception.

And finally. ...

Fellow wideout D''Wayne Bates, who has missed three games with a sprained foot, participated in part of Thursday''s practice, but he''s not running at full speed yet. The former Bear should return after the bye, but it remains
