seven interceptions and has completed just 54.8 percent of his passes. Among NFC regulars, only the Philadelphia Eagles'' Donovan McNabb (50.4), the Detroit Lions'' Joey Harrington (51.8), the Chicago Bears'' Kordell Stewart (52.8) and the Seattle Seahawks'' Matt Hasselbeck (54.2) have lower completion percentages.

The 49ers rank fifth in the NFC in yardage, but those drives tend to lead only to frustration. The team ranks 14th in the 16-team NFC when it comes to capitalizing close to the goal line. The 49ers have 10 touchdowns on 23 possessions (43.5 percent) inside the opponent''s 20.

And Garcia isn''t complaining.

"I''m for whatever works," he said. "If it''s running the football that gets us points on the board, then that''s what I want to play. I''m just trying to do my best to execute the offense. If that means handing the ball off at times and trying to get positive yardage, then that''s my role."

One other item of interest here. ...

Also according to Brown, it looks increasingly as if Eric Johnson''s comeback will have to wait until next season.

While he continues to aim for a return in 2003, his broken collarbone is healing slower
