in his back all summer, then shifted to his groin strain for a few weeks. On Thursday, Garcia''s bruised right forearm ended up on the examining table.

But like his other injuries, Brown suggests this one is more annoying than perilous. When the 49ers play the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Garcia will make his 59th consecutive start.

He sat out Thursday, however, roaming the practice field wearing a protective brace that started at his hand and covered the area about halfway to his elbow. Head coach Dennis Erickson said that Garcia will wear extra padding during Sunday''s game.

Garcia suffered the injury at some point during last Sunday''s win over the Lions. He practiced Wednesday, but the injury felt worse by the end of drills. The bruise swelled overnight, which prompted Garcia to get an MRI exam Thursday morning. The test confirmed that the injury was nothing more than a bruise, and Garcia is listed as "probable" on the injury report.

"You''d like to have him practice, but he''s been around long enough that it won''t affect him as much as it would others," Erickson said.

On a more positive note. ...

Terrell Owens, who sat out Wednesday''s practice to rest a sore right heel and Achilles, was back at practice Thursday and running fine.

Neither player has used injuries as an excuse for the team''s flawed offense this season. But it is clear that the lagging statistics are what hurts Garcia most. He isn''t happy that the passing game sputters and chugs instead of hums, as it has in his previous years.

"We haven''t played all that well offensively all season long," he said Wednesday in a solemn-faced meeting with the media. "We need to try to put some games together. We need to be more consistent and do things that allow us to get the ball downfield at times.

"It''s just been a little bit frustrating. It seems to be one of those things where we just can''t get going."
