And if all goes well Friday, he could play this weekend.

James, the Colts starting running back and leading rusher, missed the last two games with a sore back, but practiced the last two days. If he practices Friday and recovers without incident, he likely will play Sunday, head coach Tony Dungy said Thursday.

"It was a good sign coming back on the second day -- Im optimistic about his chances this week," Dungy said as the Colts prepared to play the undefeated Carolina Panthers at the RCA Dome Sunday.

"It will be [a] game-time [decision], but if he goes three practices in a row without any problems, he should be fine."

Also of interest. ...

Receiver Brandon Stokley is not on the injury report after being out the first four games of the season with a hamstring injury. He was active last week but did not play, but he said Thursday he will be available for Sunday.

Stokley, who signed as a free agent in the off-season from the Baltimore Ravens, missed most of training camp and sat out two preseason games with a foot injury.

"Im feeling better," Stokley said. "Im out there working hard to get better. I missed so much practice time that Im trying to get as many reps as I can just to get more comfortable out there. Every week I feel better, more comfortable.

"I feel better with my foot. It has to get used to get to the pounding, but its definitely getting there."

And finally. ...

As noted by the Sports XChange, Peyton Manning has thrown 11 touchdown passes and two interceptions over the past four games. Manning leads the NFL with a 103.2 passer rating.
