The league gave the Jaguars a one-game roster exemption for Smith, but they decided not to use it. The team must release a player to make room for Smith on the 53-man roster.

Del Rio also would not reveal which wide receiver -- Matthew Hatchette or J.J. Stokes -- will start opposite Smith against the Chargers. Stokes'' role was dramatically reduced in the 24-20 loss to Houston last week.
