According to league and NFLPA sources as well as Browns officials, the collective bargaining agreement prevents teams from suspending a player due to an alcohol or drug related situation.
In fact, the Browns were told by the NFL this week that such a suspension is a clear violation of the collective bargaining agreement. Yet, despite warnings from the NFL, the Browns ignored the proper protocol and suspended Green for the game.
The NFL has long told teams they are not to suspend a player with a violation of drugs or alcohol and insist the player follows the NFLs program and the necessary steps. Eventually if a suspension is warranted, it is the league -- and only the league -- that would issue such a punishment.
Glazer added: "Why they simply wouldnt follow the Jets lead with their recent deactivation of DE John Abraham is anyones guess. The Jets were told by the league they cannot suspend Abraham after an arrest for DUI, so they simply benched him for the game."
And NFLPA reps told Glazer, even if they decided to sit him for missing a meeting due to the arrest, one game check and a suspension are far too out of bounds in the punitive damages category, according to history.
