"When I look at that number, Im licking my chops," Lewis said. "I think my line does, too."
As might be expected, those comments ruffled a few feathers at Rams headquarters.
"I heard hes licking his chops about coming in here and running it up on us," defensive captain Tyoka Jackson said. "Thats fine. The way we played last week, he should be licking his chops. But I think Ahman Green was licking his chops when he came in here, and I think Jerome Bettis was licking his chops. And they left licking their wounds."
Green Bays Green was limited to 35 yards on 20 carries against the Rams. Pittsburghs Bettis managed only 42 yards on 12 carries. But the Rams were gouged for a season-high 165 yards rushing in last Sundays loss to San Francisco.
Although they rank a respectable 14th in the NFL in rushing defense, allowing 109.6 yards a game, the Rams 4.6 average per carry is tied for 27th in the league.
Not only does Lewis lead the league in rushing with 1,045 yards, hes on pace to post the second-highest single-season rushing total in NFL history. With those kind of credentials, and with the Rams still banged up on the defensive line, maybe Lewis should be licking his chops.
Nonetheless, Rams head coach Mike Martz made sure his players were aware of Lewis comments on Wednesday.
"Obviously, you kind of take that like youre being called out, and its up to us to respond," Martz said....
And one last item this morning....
The Ravens rank last in the league in red-zone offense, scoring only seven touchdowns in 24 possessions inside the 20-yard line (29.2 percent).
Their ineffectiveness to punch the ball in has been magnified by a recent rut. After scoring touchdowns on four of their first nine times in the red zone, they have cracked the goal line only three times on their last 15 trips inside the 20.
