Rookie free agent Chas Gessner, a Brown product, has been practicing with the team the past few weeks after coming off the physically unable to perform list with a hamstring injury in October. The Pats have until next week to determine whether to activate him to the roster, place him on injured reserve or release him (likely to the practice squad).
Patten tried to fight through his injury last week, practicing with the team Wednesday through Saturday, but he wasnt active for the Denver game on Monday and the teams medical staff obviously determined Patten needed the surgery to properly address the problem.
Patten, a seven-year veteran, had been the Pats No. 2 receiver to Troy Brown since joining the team in 2001. He was a key contributor in the Pats Super Bowl run. Patten hit some dry spells last season, but he still caught 61 passes for 824 yards.
He was a starter for the first three weeks this season and has nine catches for 142 yards.
Pattens role in the offense has been filled for the past few weeks by Deion Branch, who has started the last two games and has moved past Brown as the teams leading receiver with 29 catches for 427 yards and two touchdowns. Branch had a key 66-yard touchdown reception from Tom Brady in the first quarter in Denver.
Fellow second-year receiver David Givens also has come on strong, catching Bradys 18-yard game-winner Monday. At 6-foot, 212 pounds, Givens is Bradys biggest and most physical outside target.
Rookie Bethel Johnson has gotten more time with the regular offense. Johnson is the fastest player on the team (timed at 4.27 seconds in the 40-yard dash to Pattens 4.28), but his route-running is raw and his hands are inconsistent. He has seven catches for 112 yards, and hes been a consistent threat on kick returns.
