What is Fantasy Football

In its simplest form, the idea of fantasy sports is no different than any other game or contest that involves testing your knowledge against a group of friends. Fantasy sports was created over 20 years ago when a group of baseball fans took the bragging rights of — "I know more about the game than you do" — to a game level by creating rules and scoring systems to define what "best" was.

Fantasy football has become the most popular of all fantasy sports in recent years, mostly because it is one of the easier fantasy games to play. A group of friends — known as team "owners" — get together at the beginning of the football season and select a roster of NFL players with the idea of putting together the team that puts up the best statistics each week. Fantasy football contests can be found in many places on the web. They range from contests and leagues that are a total waste of time to some of the most challenging you can find.

up on an item in this weeks Team Notes, rookie tight end L.J. Smith continues to emerge as the clubs top pass-catching weapon. Smith, who had four receptions for 97 yards against the Falcons, has led the team in receiving yards in four of the last five games. The Eagles have won all four of those games.

Smith, who was the 61st overall pick in the April draft, got off to an inauspicious start this season when he dropped a pass in the end zone in the Eagles Monday night opener against the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Bucs.

"That first game, I had the jitters," he said. "But after that, Ive been trying to keep improving in practice. I get my confidence in practice. I guess the coaches see that."','11/7/2003','5:50:00 AM','Friday',505 6075,18,10,'Patten Goes Under The Knife; Status Down The Stretch Unclear...','According to Boston Herald staff writer Michael Felger, David Patten was released yesterday from an area hospital after undergoing surgery on his injured right knee on Wednesday.

Felger went on to note the exact nature of Pattens injury and the details of the surgery are not known, but the fact Patten spent the night in the hospital is not an encouraging sign. Arthroscopic procedures, from which players typically are able to recover in a short period of time, usually do not require overnight stays.

If the Pats place Patten on injured reserve, he will be lost for the season. Otherwise, they can continue to carry him on the roster in hopes he will return to full health for the stretch run in December.

The knee has been an ongoing problem since Patten jammed his leg into the turf at Gillette Stadium making a catch in Week 3 against the Jets. After sitting out the next game, Patten returned to play in Weeks 5 and 6 (making four catches for 68 yards). He hasnt seen the field in the past three weeks.

The Pats have had durability problems with their receivers this season, although none of the injuries has fallen into the serious category until Pattens surgery. That might be a concern
