at quarterback, head coach Bill Callahan admitted the team will be running a simplified version of the offense this Sunday.
And as Bell asked: "Whats more simple than running the ball -- especially against the Jets, the only team worse than the Raiders in run defense (allowing 153 yards per game)? And why havent you done it more by now?"
"I think its an inaccurate question," Callahan said Monday, using the Lions game as his only example. "Weve continued to run the football. We came out (last Sunday), we ran it in the third quarter quite well. We came into the fourth quarter. It was a two-possession game in the fourth quarter, and we decided to try to get back in the game by some balance.
"So we are attempting to run the ball. And we do obviously commit to it, and we do feature it."
Callahan ignored the fact that no NFL team has run fewer times this season than the Raiders, who have 168 rushes in eight games.
As Bell summed up: "If nothing else, running the ball would mean the Raiders undisciplined, misplaced defense would have less time on the field."','11/6/2003','1:30:00 AM','Thursday',494 6064,31,10,'Physical Pounding Taking Mental Toll On Ramsey...','According to Associated Press sports writer Joseph White, Patrick Ramsey was quick with an answer when asked what the Redskins need to do to win Sundays game against Seattle.
"I think we have to beat the blitz," he said with a chuckle.
Ramseys constant pounding is no laughing matter, though, and there is growing concern it could mar the development of a promising young quarterback.
Ramsey has taken 26 of the Redskins NFL-high 29 sacks allowed this season and hasnt gone start-to-finish for three straight games. He had to leave last Sundays loss to Dallas twice -- once to have his bruised forearm X-rayed and once to have his dislocated pinkie popped into place. Both injuries were on his non-throwing arm, so he was able to return to the game.
But at what cost?
