"Any time you start to get pressure and start to feel the heat in certain ways, whether its through blitzes or other things, youre naturally going to be more quick to react to certain things," Garcia said. "Youre not going to be as calm in the pocket. Whether I was that way or not, who knows, but there were times I had to move. There just wasnt a whole lot of stability at times."
Inman added that while on the sidelines the past three games and in the film room afterward, Garcia helped tutor Rattay.
He was really good with bouncing things off of and being supportive of me," Rattay said. "...I was really appreciative of that. Ive learned so much from Jeff about how to manage the game and protect the ball."
Thats exactly what head coach Dennis Erickson wants to hear: strong rapport among his quarterbacks, and Garcia learning by watching.
"Its just like Tim learning from Jeff all these years," Erickson said. "It goes hand in hand."
Garcias absence didnt invoke panic-like statements from his teammates, and you wouldnt expect it to when Rattay goes 2-1 in his place. But Garcias return has sparked some excitement among the offense.
"Hes the leader," fullback Fred Beasley said. "It means a lot to get him back out there. Rattay came in and did a great job, did what hes supposed to do. But Jeff is our guy. Were behind him, and hopefully we can use that to our advantage this week."
Added center Jeremy Newberry: "Hes been our leader for years now. To have him in the huddle, itll give you a boost energy-wise."
According to SportsLine.com insider Pete Prisco, the 49ers are making the right decision by going back to Garcia -- especially if the Niners are going to have any chance to make the playoffs, Garcia has to be in as the starter. That said he could be in a situation where he has to prove himself
