part of the practice sitting in a cart with ice on his calf.
The practice wrapped up, however, with McNair trotting onto the field, lining up behind center and running the "victory" play where he takes a snap and quickly kneels down.
"Steve was a little better today," head coach Jeff Fisher said. "He did a few things. ... But it still doesnt change our approach going into the ballgame.
"The factors are how he can move around without pain and how freely he can do that. Its not a matter of gutting it out through the pain, because the pain is going to tell you what the condition of the muscle is."
Fisher said he wouldnt start Volek and then put McNair in if Volek struggles.
"If Steves up hes going," Fisher said. "If Steve cant go hell be dressed in street clothes."
A few final thoughts on this one. ...
McNair has played through a wide variety of injuries, but this one is different.
As Fisher pointed out earlier this week, a pain killing shot is not going to enable him to run or push off it the calf has not recovered. And the Titans know they could get themselves in bigger trouble if he suffers further injury to the calf.
Bottom line?
McNair playing at 80 percent isnt the worry. He can do that -- and perform well. Unfortunately, the question here isnt how well he might be able to play, but whether hell play at all.
The Titans leave for New York today and theres simply no way of knowing with full certainty that McNair will actually play. I have a hard time starting that guy -- especially if Im battling for a playoff spot. ...
For what its worth, if Volek winds up getting the nod, the Titans insist nothing in their approach will change.
"Theres no change," Fisher said. "Thats why Billy is our No. 2. Hes got the mobility, hes got the arm strength. He can do everything that Steve does, so we would not change."
Still, the Jets have a terrible run defense, and the Titans, whove struggled to run, are bound to try as much as they have all season to get Eddie George in control of the game.','11/30/2003','6:20:00 AM','Sunday',732
