leaping corner and in front of a second cornerback and Sowell made a nifty catch. Two plays later, Santana Moss made a game-winning 3-yard touchdown grab with 26 seconds left.
In that game, Sowell, who finished with five catches for 52 yards, also had three special teams tackles.
"They have shown confidence in me," said Sowell, who is in his first season as a starter after replacing departed veteran Richie Anderson. "I feel that when your number is called, you have to show up and made the play. Were professionals. We get paid. I have high expectations for myself. I expect to make plays and they expect me to make plays.
"Richie taught me a lot when he was here. Im just carrying it on to the next level now. Its my time to take over. Richie told me that one day this time would come and it has finally come."
Sowell, a seven-year pro, was a special teams demon his first six seasons and is the Jets all-time leader in special-teams tackles (127). This season, the Jets tried to take Sowell off the special teams because they didnt want to overburden him, but he was so valuable they put him back on the unit. His 14 special-teams tackles are second on the team.
"He comes up with big plays for us," head coach Herman Edwards said. "He kind of goes unseen. Hes doing a great job. Hes a good blocker, a very, very smart guy who can adjust to the ball. Hes not the fastest guy in the world, not the quickest, but he makes plays."
Claimed off waivers from Green Bay in August, 1997, Sowell is self-made. A seventh-round pick out of Tulane, he has gone from a special teams player to a starting -- and productive -- fullback. Theres only one thing missing.
"Im satisfied that Im starting in the NFL after all these years, but Im not satisfied with our record (4-7)," Sowell said. "It all boils down to winning."
As noted in a previous Update, if the Titans roll up on speedsters Moss and Jonathan Carter, look for Sowell and tight end Anthony Becht will continue prospering.','11/30/2003','5:00:00 AM','Sunday',730
