in the third week of the season left him unable to cut and thrust Johnson into a make-or-break role.
He quickly became the symbol of the Bengals revival.
As fans chanted his first name, Johnson ran for 101 yards in a win over Seattle that gave the Bengals confidence they could beat the NFLs top teams. He ran for 182 against Houston, then 165 in a victory over previously unbeaten Kansas City.
While Johnson was proving the Bengals could win without Dillon, Lewis was promising that that job would revert once Dillon was able to play.
The two of them alternated series in a 34-27 win at San Diego last Sunday, and both were effective. Dillon carried 18 times for 108 yards, and Johnson ran 16 times for 65 yards.
Although Dillon is expected to start Sunday in Pittsburgh, the job-sharing arrangement will continue.
"You like how it worked out because we won the game," Lewis said. "Weve got two guys that are running very well, two guys that I believe are fresh, which is important for running backs at this point in the season.
"Each week well determine how were doing it and so forth. Coreys our starting guy, and weve got to work Rudi into the mix."
Dillon gave the first-year coach his first direct challenge last month, saying he felt unappreciated and wanted out of Cincinnati. Dillon was more diplomatic while the Bengals won five of six to move into a first-place tie in the AFC North.
Johnson, a third-year running back from Auburn, hasnt complained about losing the starting job. He wanted to make sure it wouldnt become a distraction on a team thats winning for the first time in 13 years.
"Weve been here for a while and we dont want to go back to how its been, the losing seasons," Johnson said. "Like Ive told him, whoevers in there, lets just get it done and win games."
Dillons teammates were stunned by his outburst last month, wondering why he was complaining when the team was winning. Theyve given him the benefit of the doubt because he always ran hard during the lean years.
Plus, hes still one of the toughest runners in the league when healthy.
